Review
An interesting premise: Jet Mason is attacked in her home and left for dead. She wakes up in hospital 36 hours later with a brain injury which doctors advise her will kill her within a week. A serial procrastinator, she decides to finally do something with her life: solve her own murder.
I don’t know why Holly Jackson has switched from setting her books in the UK to the USA. She’s British, she knows Britain, she gets the details about what it’s like in Britain right. The setting of this book is so generic.
Jet and the narrative in general seems to assume she has exactly seven days to live, like a countdown to a known time she’ll die. But even the doctors in the story make it clear she’ll die *within* a week. So that’s a bit silly too.
I’m not a fan of the protagonist driving around with her brain injury either. She could pass out, lose control of the car, and kill a dozen people at any time. Very irresponsible. But the doctors just seem fine with her driving away from the hospital.
Apart from that, it was great though. Lots of twists, some guessable, others which catch you out of nowhere. A good mystery, mostly likeable protagonist. Took two days to read while I was off work with covid.
