Kill Joy is a prequel novella to A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. Having Pippa investigate a murder in this book would break continuity with the trilogy, so instead it’s based on Pippa and her friends attending a murder mystery dinner party, which ultimately gives her the idea to investigate a real life murder and kicks off the rest of the books.
The actual mystery is interesting and Pippa’s solution to it is ingenious, but I feel Holly Jackson overdoes the foreshadowing and references to the other books. If this had been written before the other books, then I’d maybe find it clever how she planned everything out. But it was written last, so adding all the callbacks just feels cheap.
